Fix notification issues on iOS and Android

Not receiving Beside notifications on iPhone or Android - how to check your settings and fix missing call and message alerts.

If you're not receiving notifications for incoming calls, texts, or AI Receptionist activity, the issue is almost always a permissions or settings problem on your device. Work through the steps below for your platform.

On iPhone

Check notification permissions

  1. Open your iPhone Settings

  2. Scroll down and tap AppsBeside

  3. Tap Notifications

  4. Make sure Allow Notifications is toggled on

  5. Check that Alerts, Sounds, and Badges are all enabled

Check Focus and Do Not Disturb

If Focus or Do Not Disturb is active, Beside notifications may be silenced.

  1. Open Settings → Focus

  2. Check each active Focus mode (Do Not Disturb, Work, Sleep, etc.)

  3. Under Apps, make sure Beside is in the allowed list - or disable the Focus mode temporarily to test

Check incoming call notifications specifically

Beside uses VoIP push notifications to deliver incoming call alerts. If calls ring on the device but notifications are missing, or if calls aren't ringing at all:

  1. Go to Settings → Apps → Beside

  2. Make sure Background App Refresh is enabled

  3. Force-close Beside and reopen it

  4. If the issue persists, delete and reinstall Beside - then log back in with the same login method you originally used

⚠️ Low Power Mode: When Low Power Mode is active on iPhone, Background App Refresh is disabled, which can prevent Beside from receiving push notifications reliably. Try disabling Low Power Mode if you're missing notifications.

On Android

Check notification permissions

  1. Open your phone Settings

  2. Tap AppsBeside

  3. Tap Notifications

  4. Make sure notifications are enabled for Beside

  5. Check that the relevant notification categories (calls, messages) are not individually muted

Check battery optimization

Android's battery optimization can kill background processes and prevent notifications from arriving.

  1. Go to Settings → Apps → Beside

  2. Tap Battery

  3. Select Unrestricted (or "Don't optimize") to allow Beside to run in the background

📌 The exact path varies by Android manufacturer (Samsung, Google Pixel, OnePlus, etc.). Search "battery optimization" in your phone's Settings if you can't find it.

Check Do Not Disturb

  1. Go to Settings → Sound → Do Not Disturb

  2. If it's enabled, check whether Beside is in the exceptions list - or disable it temporarily to test

On both platforms

  • Make sure you're logged in - notifications only work when you're signed in to Beside

  • Update the app - outdated versions can have notification bugs. Check the App Store or Google Play for updates

  • Check your internet connection - push notifications require an active internet connection

  • Restart your phone - a restart can resolve temporary notification delivery issues

FAQ

I get notifications for texts but not for calls. What's wrong?

Incoming call notifications use a different delivery mechanism (VoIP push) than text notifications. On iPhone, make sure Background App Refresh is enabled for Beside. On Android, make sure battery optimization is set to Unrestricted for Beside. If the issue persists, reinstall the app and log back in with the same login method.

My notifications work fine on Wi-Fi but stop on cellular. Why?

This is usually caused by a VPN or carrier data restrictions. Try disabling any VPN and check that Beside has permission to use cellular data: Settings → Apps → Beside → Mobile Data (iOS) or Data Usage (Android).

I enabled all the permissions but I'm still not getting notifications. What else can I try?

Try logging out and back in to refresh your push notification token: go to Settings → Log out, then sign in again with the same method. If that doesn't work, delete and reinstall the app, then log back in. If the issue continues, reach out to our support team via the in-app chat.
